That looks real good and I will be ordering one through PainPal when the thing resets on July 1st as I went over my limit ...
So how does it seem to work with bumps twisting & flexing ??? That price sure seems FAIR ENOUGH to me !! Paul |

So, mabey this is a dumb ?, but I can't tell 100% from the pictures. So, does this this secondary latch release with the primary when you pull the handle, and re-latch on it's own when the carrier is closed?

Yes, The latch pawl slips over the strike plate bar and drops into position before the primary latch engages. All you have to do is close the carrier like you normally do. No operation of the release handle is nessesary upon closing the carrier. When you operate the release handle to open the gate the secondary latch pawl operates first and clears the top of the secondary strike bar before the primary latch releases. You will never know this is installed. It only really latches if the primary latch fails. When the carrier is fully closed and primary latch engaged, the hook of the secondary latch is positioned about 3/8" in front of the secondary strike bar. If the primary latch should fail and the carrier pops open the hook pawl of the secondary latch slides back 3/8" and engages the secondary strike bar holding it in arrest. You should be able to tell if this happens by the rattling sound of the carrier, Kinda self alarming I guess. ZED: I really can't answer your question about how it works under trail conditons as I really haven't field tested this thing. The spring on the latch pawl should ensure it stays engaged. I would add that there is some means of adjustment to compensate for worn carrier bushings but it is highly advised to replace them if they're worn to ensure reliable fit-up and function. This device was fitted and constructed on a BlaZeR with brand new carrier bushings. This post has been edited by hotratz: Jun 29 2007, 06:56 PM |

How much is shipping to zip 13090?
Thanks for the PM... My order is placed! The spare popped open on my 1996 and crushed the rear quarter nicely. Not gonna deal with that again thanks to your slick design :) . |

I was wondering about our neighbors up north just last night. The shipping calculator at top has a drop down menu to select Canada. Looks pretty expensive I'll have to look into it further. Do you use postal codes of any type? EDIT: Shipping calculator no longer needed. See link in first post This post has been edited by hotratz: Jan 29 2008, 08:52 AM |

Thanks , I didn't see the drop down menu thing ... Yes we have "Postal Codes" here , for example mine is L3C 4K9 Have you thought about selling it on eBay , I don't know if that would make it easier or not as the buyer takes care of the shipping ... You see here ( Canada ) we would have to pay for shipping twice , once for the item to be sent through the states and then again for it to be shipped through Canada from the port of entry and then pay at the door plus we have to pay tax & duty so that could get expensive but there is a way around that , if you write "Gift" on the box , no taxes and duties are charged .. This is what Mike the tire drop guy used to do but it will be what ever you feel comfortable with ... Thanks Again hotratz ! Zed |

Ha! That's funny, I was thinking the same thing. I looked at it a little already. Have to go into design phase soon. |

For those of you who have received your carrier latch, I would greatly appreciate a PM with some feedback on fitment. While the ones I produced fit my vehicle with plenty of adjustment it's apparent that there will be fitment variations with each vehicle. Your feedback will help me improve the device and rectify your installment issues if they occur.
Also please note, If your carrier has in the past open very hard against the hinges it may have sprung the quarter panel out enough that the new latch will not strike in the right place. If this is the case you will need to spring it back before the latch will strike properly. One method that works that I have used is to open the carrier all the way. Place a hard object like a large nut in the pinch point of the carrier hinge. Now pull on the carrier as if you where closing it against the obstruction you placed in the pinch point. Do this top and bottom alternatlely and it will spring the quarter panel back. This will also pull about 90% of the dent out of the quarter panel that occured when the carrier sprung open. You can tell when it's back in position by sighting along the inside egde of the tail light lens. The edges of the body that meet the edge of the tailgate should alighn with the inside edge of the tail light lens. Mine where at one time about 1/4" off. I just bolted mine on. The latch is offset to the left (when looking at the rear of the vehicle), but works ok.

My latch kit came in the mail today. It's already on the Z... Had to go get a torx bit from my toolbox at work but once I got it, the install took about 10 minutes (most of that taking the spare off and putting it back on after). ;)
I had commented to Steve in the order email that in 5 years with my 93 and 1 year with the 05, I had never had the carrier open on me.... DOH! A few days ago on Saturday, a week after I had ordered the latch, TA-DA! The carrier opened while I was driving across Manhattan. :Idunno: Karma? Luckily, no one was following close and I noticed it before anything bad happened. Just tapped the breaks and it shut solid. Like most great inventions, the latch looks SO simple and obvious once you see how it works. Yeah for smart tinkerers like Steve! :LS1MikesTruck: -dc4bs FEEDBACK: The latch mounted straight up and dead on center with no adjustments at all. I centered the bolts in the middle of the slots on both parts and made em snug, carefully closed the carrier, and everything looked perfect. Opened the carrier, tightened the bolts the rest of the way and put the spare back on. By far the easiest mod ever.
