Saves weight. I like getting 12.2 instead of 12.1 mpg.

Please tell me you're kidding.

100% probably serious.

I've never understood the people who fill up to less than a full tank, or those who drive around on fumes all the time.

The fuel costs the same amount, whether you buy 1/2 a tank or a full tank. You'll end up paying it sooner or later. If you can't budget well enough to understand that, then disregard.

If you want to put $5 in at a time, do so at the top 1/4 of your tank, instead of the last 1/4 tank. Simple as that.

Because if you only have $20 in your pocket you will buy $20 weather you have an empty or half full tank.

Besides, it doesn't matter since it does't hurt the pump at all.

I have to buy gas with a card. I can't stand filling up to anything less than a full tank, and I also don't want to be the idiot going inside for change.

Running the pump dry does hurt it. Running it low may not, but if you run that puppy dry, you'd better believe it's getting a little warmer than it should. You're infinitely more likely to run dry with the whole "5 gallons at a time" mentality, instead of just putting gas in the damn thing when you get to 1/4 tank.

I always fill mine up. Though I agree running them low will eventually cause your pump to die, it's not because of that. It's because eventually it bites you in the ass and does go dry once or twice. In my experience, I've only had a fuel pump crap out after I've ran completely out of gas.

Running it out does, running low does not.

And just because you don't fill it all the time doesn't mean you are going to run out of gas all the time.

Just wondering how many fuel pumps you guys have gone through, my 3rd delphi just died on me two days ago, All together i've had 1 airtex and soon to be 4 delphi. This would be fine if it wasn't all in a year and half. wallbash.gif Anyone else have this kind of luck?

I would go through and check all the wiring to the pump. My stock one went after 10 years, then an aftermarket went 2 years later. I was pissed, so I cut it open to see why it failed. A chunk of plastic broke off and jammed itself in the gear so the pump could not rotate.
So far the Delphi I have now is 3 years old. Cut yours open too see where it failed.

I've got 88k on the original pump, run it to "E" on just about every tank, Filter has been replaced once in all these years. FYI, it's an '05.

Indeed. 4 Delphi's and one airtex. Current Delphi is hot-wired and has extra grounds to the frame.

Hot-wired as in you have a switch in cab to turn it on/off?

It's nuts how some trucks can go through so many and others have hardly any issues. I'm afraid to talk about my pump, I don't need any bad voodoo, I prefer to just let it keep doing what it's been doing since 1996 and not think about it. ph34r.gif

Hot-wired as in direct power from alternator for full power all the time. Run a similar setup on my Buick. I've never run the tank dry, maybe once or twice til the low fuel light comes on. There were ground issues that kept blowing taillight bulbs and when that happened the splice pack connector was damaged and shorted the wiring for the pump. The pump wiring no longer uses this connector.

I got about 93,000 miles on my 03 zr2 and have only replaced the fuel pump once. I have 169000 on my 95 s10 and have replaced the fuel pump twice.

So its a crap shoot. some get lucky and some don't. I would say 5 is on the very unlucky side shakira.gif

I take my tank to a little less than 1/4 tank every time. Never run it extremely low...i just always fill up on sundays if I just do the usual driving during the week
