I got a block with a casting number or 638. It's a block from '89 to '95 ( the TBI engines). I got Vortec heads, but I was just wondering and wanted to verify that this block will work for the swap. Will this block still bolt up to the manual trans? Or is there any difference as far as mating between this block and later years castings?

Thanks all!

As far as mating to the tranny goes you have to love GM. I'm pretty sure all their V8s have the same bell-housing pattern. from the beginning of time to this years castings. and since our 4.3s have the ass of a V8, you win!

i would suggest against using an 87-95 block.

first and foremost not all tbi blocks are setup for roller lifters.

secondly they have an extra hole under the water pump that needs to be plugged to use a vortec style water pump.

they also have a slightly different timing cover mounting boss. It makes sealing a plastic cover a total pain in the ass. I have had to put 3 on my truck and i think i FINALLY got it to seal correctly.

also not that its a huge deal but the older blocks are all sae threads where a newer 4.3 is mostly metric. The only area i have ran into issues is on the transmission bolts. its not a huge deal but still a headache.

I am considering using this for my swap on my Z.

Hmm. Didn't read anything about that hole for the water pump. I'll have to check that out. Does that affect the cooling system at all, or are the cooling passages different as well?

And the block I have does have the provision for the hold down plate and for the camshaft button.

And could the 87-95 timing cover be used over the Vortec cover, or does it not allow enough clearance for the Crank Position Sensor reluctor wheel?

Thanks!

An 87-95 timing cover has no provisions for a crank sensor.
