So I am currently looking for a motor for my 96' S-10.

My engine vin code is "x"

Most of the motors I have looked at so far have been vin code "W"

So whats the difference in these motors?? idunno.gif

W is higher power output. Found in Blazers and some trucks.

You can use a 1996-1999 W in a X truck, use the flexplate off your truck, and and the intake maniold its not really high output I think its like 5 hp and 5lbs of torque differnce betwwen the motors you wont notice the differnece.

the block and the heads are the same part # the difference between the motors is the cam profile.

99 was the last year for X motors in zr2 trucks 2003 when the W became a X
99-01 the heads were changed, and all bolts are metric the block is still the same. you can use a late model W in your truck.

You can get a rebuilt from reacon with a 3 warranty for like 1700.

'95 - '02 the "W" engine code was used to denote the 4.3L V6 with 190hp. The "X" code for '95-'02 was used for the 4.3L with 180hp. In 2003 GM removed the "W" engine code and the "X" engine code denoted 4.3L engines with 190hp

I have to look up the GMC version, but I dont think the gmcs s-series trucks got a X in 2002.

The chevy ZR2 truck didnt get a X motor in 2000,2001,2002 not untill 2003 when the W became an X and in 2004 the s-series were phased out

IF your thinking about the old HO option back in like 1996, there was High output option for tbi or a cpi motor.
I think is there where most people I talk to get confused with this whole High Output thing about vin W and vin X there all the same, they all have lifter problems when revved high, they all leak from the rear main, they all came with crappy oil lines, and they all have intake gasket problems around 80,000 miles. Other than that they are great motor
