After seeing a couple of people mention state laws regarding tint laws, I thought I would post up a link to a site that monitors news feeds and such to keep their law database as current as possible. I have verified the accuracy of MY state, so it should be accurate for yours.
Maybe we can get this stickied.

-Front windows and 6" of window tint on the front w/s is correct, and while I don't know the specifics I do believe the reflectivity is correct.
As far as the back windows, and I will check to make sure this is correct today, I believe that windows behind the front doors have no restrictions on darkness. It's reffered to as the limo law when explained to people.
Good idea on the topic.

Yeah i was always under the impression that everything behind the front 2 doors was pretty much fair game in WA state. I thought you werent supposed to have anything on the front windows also.
If got my front doors tinted right at legal level or maybe 1 past, Not dark enough to have a cop actaully stop me for it though. Got the strip across the windshield of the darkest tint available.
The best thing is i got my 85 Blazer done the same way completely for free as with this one! Was really good friends with the owner of a tint shop here when i used to work at the auto glass place. Did the front two windows in my parents suburban for my mom for $50 also.

32% for georgia on side windows. no law on back glass. they did away with the window tint law for about a year down here in georgia but after the deaths of something like 12 officers due to them not being able to see that the driver had a gun through the window... the brought the law back. and Georgia state patrol dont play when it comes to window tint either!!

That makes sense, If i was a cop i would want the law there.
I have heard if they catch you with darker than legal here they will make you rip it off right then and there or you get a ticket. Or maybe you get a ticket either way but there is something else that happens if you dont take it off right then and there.

It HAS to be like that in every state.
Look at how many STOCK vehicles have DARK limo tint on the rear/side windows from the FACTORY (mini vans, etc)..??

Yup. A buddy of mine in Albuquerque owned a tint shop, I just gave him the keys and told him to do whatever looked good, but not TOO dark..
I still sometimes don't like it, but he put 5% over my rear and ext cab windows over top the factory tint, and something like 10 or 15 on the sides and 5 across my windshield..
It is a PITA sometimes, I have to roll my winders down sometimes at night to back up. I've came close to getting them redone before.

Talk with your eye doctor. Tell him your eyes are sensitive to bright light and get them to write up something for you. From the fourteen years I have had this paper, I have only been pulled over once. He had no problems with it and sent me on my way. I think he was pissed though. He was young and was looking to write tickets.

i tried that last year at my eye doctor and he wouldn't write me that slip
what eye doctor did you go to?? i might have to drop by his office and get me that slip (i'm at 15% all the way around with 6" strip of limo on the front)

AS-1 refers to the type of glass, the "category", that your windshield is. AS-1 referes to laminated glass (layer of annealed glass, layer of pvb, layer of annealed glass) and the safety standards it has to pass.
I have never heard the term AS-1 line, but I can guesse what they mean is you can tint to where the factory shade band on your car stops. Only problem with that is lot's of cars don't have shadebands. Another possible explanation is that a lot of cars have an AS-1 bug (a "bug" is the printing on your windshield that denotes type, DOT manufacturer numbers, etc....basicaly a code) up by the rearvies mirror button (or where it would be if you don't have a rear view mirror mount on the glass), and maybe that's your line. Again, the problem with that is not every windshield has it up there.
So, basicaly that's my best guese, and it isn't much help... lol

apparently all my tint is illegal... im running 2.5 all the way around ontop of the factory tint...
hawaii laws and pa laws are both accurate for the front sides though.... never got a ticket in pa for it though
hawaii has a $278 fine for it though

Actually, that was very helpful. You seem to know your glass shizzle.
So let's see if you can answer this one:
What the hell is that "dot matrix" kinda thing that you see on the inside of some windshields (around the perimeter, also found ner the rear view mirror)??
The people I've asked who don't really know tell me it's a built in antenna...

It is exactly that, a dot matrix. If that was your guess on the name, good guess! lol
Dot matrixes are purely decorative, but can serve a purpose. Around the very edge of every windshield made for the last 20 years or so manufacturers have applied a black strip, a "frit" band, this hides the urethane that holds your windshield to the body and also blocks the suns rays from getting to it which would erode the urethane. The dot matrix that they have been using more and more over the last 5 years or so will always but into the frit band. The pattern is designed along with the car when it's all still drawings, sometimes it serves a purpose; like on the new chevy/gmc trucks they have a dot matrix in the shape of a third visor (a matrix along the top that dips down 4 or 5 inches in between where the two interior visors flip down) that acts as, yep you guessed it, a third visor. Sometimes, like on the back glass of a Huyandai Accent, they are purely decorative, just another something to set it apart.
The bad thing about dot matrixs is if you have a lot of it on your back glass and you want to get aftermarket tint put on, they either have to black the matrix out with tape or deal with the fact that tint over dot matrix never looks that good. The dots are bonded onto the inside of the glass and stick up ever so slightly, I want to say about .004 mm (could be way off)...the tint can't adhere right next to the dots, it looks different than the rest of the back glass.

I miss the 5% I had in the Blazer. Think I might have to go darker on the truck, this "Matching the front tint to the stock rear tint" just is not cutting it.

Go with a high quality metalized (or better) film from Johnsons or Llumar, 10% on the doors, 15% over the factory tinting (quarter windos and back)... You can still see a little at night but still looks killer in the sunlight.
