So i went to Jiffy Lube to have my oil changed about an hour ago and for your info i never go there but I won a gift certificate. I knew they would try and pull my leg and try to get me to buy everything in the book including an air filter althougha I have a K & N and he did try but Im not stupid!

Half ways through the service he tells me that I have the wrong antifreeze in my system and that they could do it for whatever rip off price he told me. I told him yes i know and to just leave it and then he said well this stuff ruins you radiator and cap. Is this true? Does using regular antifreeze ruin the radiator and the cap?

If this is so should I go back to DEX because i have heard so many good things and bad things about both types. DEX causes clogs but is made for GM vehicles. Traditional green stuff ruins the radiaor and cap but doesn't clog.

By the way this guy was a real asshole about every little thing.

Bah. Regular green (the "old fashioned" stuff) doesn't ruin radiators. I think the only reason the industry switched away from it is that it's toxic. Other than that, I don't think there was a problem.

Now, Dex-cool will sludge up when it gets contaminated.

Sounds to me like a rip-off sales pitch.

EDIT: I just thought tho, I can't remember if they changed any seals or whatever to work with Dex-cool and the new stuff could be damaged by the old fluid???

INSANE, never go there, i wouldn't even go there if i had a free oil for life coupon from them. I HATE JIFFY LUBE

Dex-cool and it's variants were designed to work in engines with aluminum parts in contact with the cooling system. The green stuff will not inhibit the corrosive affects on aluminum as will Dex-cool.

EDIT: But thanks for straightening us out... So there IS a reason to keep running Dex-cool in the newer engines, eh? I guess I'm glad I didn't switch. I do make sure my system is clean tho, I'm a bit paranoid about that.

My bank gave me a bunch of coupons for jiffy lube, I tossed them quick.
I had them do my wifes car after my motorcycle wreck sense I only had one hand, and they cost me $50 and took some of her change out of the tray, and the fool took out her air filter that was brand spanking new and asked me if i wanted to change it, and then when he put it back he did not get the air box latched down right...
and why the hell do they vacuum the fuckin car then charge you for it when you never asked. (im assuming thats where the extra $ they charged me for came from)
lol, the bank sent us some stuff a while back reminding us to change the oil, I'm guessing sense I never used the bank coupons with the bank logo and the customer number printed on them. jester.gif

My wife always went to wal-mart before to get her oil changed and I gotta say they never tried any of that bull shit, and she never had a problem with them not tightening down something...

And for fun I asked them how much a new air filter was, $20 for a $8 filter...

HA!, I actually paused for a split second before I chose the incorrect spelling.
Thanks for straightening me out Ding but sadly I probably will re-offend.

So what is better Dex or traditional? What should i be running, and if it should be dex is runnign traditional going to ruin anything?

Well, maybe we need to do more research but I'm going to take it as fact what Hotratz said. Dex-cool has some special rust inhibitors for the aluminum parts of the engine (do we have alum blocks?).

Now, maybe it would take a million years for rust to form or maybe 3 years, I don't know.

I don't let anyone change the oil in my vehicles. When I was 19 years old, I took my 1983 Buick Regal to Jiffy Lube (right next door to where I worked). I did this during my lunch break one hot summer day. After I drove the car 300 yards back to work and parked it, something made me think to check the oil level. It was BONE DRY. The tools forgot to put oil in the car. Needless to say, I was pretty friggin pissed. Also, a friend of mine went to Jiffy Lube and one of those fuck-sticks blew the grease gaskets apart on his ball joints.

Because of those incidents and others, I do all the regular scheduled service on my own. That includes coolant, which I plan to do again this spring. I plan to buy the Dex-cool just like last time and mix it 50-50 with distilled water. My truck has 61,000 miles on it.

Now, if I took it somewhere to get the coolant changed, what could go wrong?

A) They would mix tap water with the antifreeze and at the wrong proportions - probably too much water.
B) They don't install the plug correctly and now it leaks antifreeze from the radiator.
C) They spill antifreeze on the engine block, making the stuff smoke and stink.

You get the picture. sticksmack.gif

Our blocks/heads are iron but I believe our radiators and possibly thermo. housing and heater core may be aluminum.

Oh and Ding, the word rust usually refers to iron oxidation bobbytrendy.gif

I would stick to Dex myself but that's your call. Just the fact that it is an extended life coolant (100K + miles) and inhibits aluminum oxides is enough incentive for me to maintain it.

That dexcool protecting aluminum is bullshit. I had all sorts of aluminum parts on my Eclipse that came in contact with the coolant and 140,000 miles on her never once had a corosion problem with the aluminum parts.

Regular coolant with water wetter or purple ice IMO

26 for oil filter fuel lube and check diff lubes and fill coolant and washer fluid and so forth ..about 26.. it was that for the last oil i changed but it took 7 quarts... so would be less with less oil obviously
