MOBIL 1 is different at WalMart??

So I heard from a trusted friend that the Mobil 1 sold at walmart is a formula made specially for walmart. He said look at the labels, what you want is class four synthetic.

 

Anyone have any personal experiences or facts to back up or disprove this rumor?

From that link, it sounds to me the person who answered the question tip-toed around it instead of a straight forward answer. I've never used Mobil 1 personally but worth looking into.

Yes I agree. Maybe Mobil 1 doesnt even make this Walmart stuff, they just sell the name? I hate feeling like I've been tricked or lied to.

Interesting. I have a jug from Wal-Mart at home, I will have to look and see if its class 4.

The Walmart Corp can't be trusted in my eyes. Even their tires are unique and made only exclusively for them. Take the Goodyear Authority A/T's for example. They can't even be bought directly from Goodyear. A little bit odd don't ya think?

Mobil 1, or any other high dollar synthetic, is a waste in a 4.3 anyway. These motors don't even come close to the stresses that would justify big $ oil.

Some people live in extreme climates and would benefit from it. Most would not.

Cant really group everyone in the same category.

Synthetic may have a slight advantage in extreme climates, but there still isn't a large enough margin to justify using expensive oil in a 4.3.

I think the synthetic has its place, BUT that place isn't your average turd motor. Didn't do any good for JW's truck.

I respect synthetic, and would use it in the right application/environment. My 4.3 with tolerances as loose as Paris Hilton isn't the right application/environment. lol

 

I've ran Quaker State 10w30 dino oil in every vehicle I've owned, including 4 S-Series trucks, all with 4.3's, totaling almost three quarters of a million miles and haven't seen a reason to stop anytime soon. It seems to be getting the job done just fine. :)

Exxon/Mobil does not market a special "Mobil 1" at WallMart.

 

Can you imagine the bad PR that would generate?

Sheesh.

 

What Exxon/Mobil does do is formulate different blends of Mobil 1 for North America and the EU. The good stuff is sold overseas. The M1 marketed in NA is a slightly lesser quality oil, using at Type IV base stock, which is sold here for competitive reasons some of which have to do with the arbitration action Mobil lost to Castrol a number of years ago.

I am currently trying Mobil 1 in our lawn mower/garden tractors. I overwork (?) these air cooled motors regularly running nearly zero intake vacuum especially when using the added-on vacuum this time of year. Twin blades on each spindle move lots of air, they tend to vacuum the grass upright making for a better cut as well as spraying the finer clippings farther out so much that it doesn't leave any mounds of clipping anywhere.

 

The Briggs motor on one has an oil cooler which helps a little but both machines tend to 'thicken' the oil within one or two uses, less than ten hours. Syn 5W-30, dino 5w-30, straight dino 30, all oils will thicken (when checked cold). Maybe I should start checking operating temps, all I know is the overtemp lights on the motors work, like when clippings begin to restrict the cooling air intake they light and immediately cools once cleared off so I imagine the oil temps are within designed ranges, I hope.

 

Oil consumption did increase on the Onan without an oil cooler when using Mobil 1 so that machine I have switched back to dino oil and so far the consumption is still up. I'm still trying to figure out why oil use increased, but for a 12 year history of working its butt off I shouldn't really complain, it may be just showing its age and getting near time for fresh rings or pistons or both.

Different formula or not, I have ran Mobil 1 Extended performance 15K oil with Mobil 1 filters for 155,000 miles now. Every 5 quart jug (great value) has been purchased from Wal-Mart. My truck now has 200,000 miles on it and no issues pertaining to what a bad engine oil could cause. Of course I have had all the same issues as most have on here with classic 4.3 issues, but as far as internal engine noise and all that, my truck still accelerates strong and runs well.

 

So from this person's perspective, I don't know what "quality" their oil is, but i have been nothing but impressed. I have always ran the same 5 quarts for about 15k before any oil change. Once or twice, i believe the oil hit 18K and still no issues. So for me, I see no reason to change. Maybe synthetic is over kill, and maybe it does not provide any benefits over standard oil in terms of engine performance, but I do love not having to change oil every 3k to 5k and instead going 15k without even a hint of a problem.

The Onan died, almost. Broke the front rod but still runs on the rear cyl and got back into the barn. Replaced that 20 HP with a 25 HP Robin/Subaru V-twin with an oil cooler. After the first 10 hours it should have been well broke in so I changed to Mobil 1. Expect this motor to last a long time as it isn't fully looded and over-worked like it did that poor Onan.

 

Last year wife's Craftsman mower with a 22.5 HP locked up, replaced that with a 28 HP Briggs Vertical V-twin also with an oil cooler. Not over working that motor a bit either.

 

All my air cooled motors are running Mobil 1, Harley, Suzuki, Briggs singles, Techumsah 10 HP single. All run fine and very little oil use even tho some of the small ones are way old.

Wouldn't surprise me if its 100% true, most don't have a clue and just trust what they buy.

As for Dino vs syn. I run synthetic in all my vehicles. Only from Schaffers oil better oil better performance better life of the motor also cheaper in the long run

I have never bought it from walmart but I run mobil1 syn oil and mobil1 filter in my truck for almost 100k now and it still runs flawlessly! but instead of changing the oil every 8-10k like recommended most of the time its between 13 and 17k I have ran it to 25k too see what it would do and I still have no problems with it I think its amazing oil and will continue too use in every vehicle I own!
